Winning the Race

In November 1993 I decided that I would run instead of walk the Komen Race in November 1993. As I was training, I heard a voice say "You are going to win the race" I thought you must be crazy. 3 months later, I was watching WBAL during their Buddy Check segment; I checked my breast and immediately set up an appointment with my Ob-Gyn. He sent me to get a mammogram the next day. When my physician got the results, he informed that I needed to see the surgeon. The surgeon said "Looks like it is cancer." I immediately heard "I told you will win this race. After hearing that voice knew that what ever happened I was going to be okay. I ended up having a lumpectomy in April 2004 and went through chemo and radiation due to my family history. The medical staff could not believe my attitude, and some friends thought I was crazy because I was handling it so well and that my attitude was so positive. I truly believe that God gives you only what you can handle. I bought the wigs and head covers, but opted for the sexy bald look. My mother had a mastectomy 20 years ago and my aunt died from breast cancer over 30 years ago.
